Shopify, Amazon, and Stripe: Who’s Responsible for Collecting Tax?
Selling through a major platform? Don’t assume they’re handling all your tax obligations.
Many sellers believe platforms like Shopify, Amazon, and Stripe handle all sales tax collection and remittance. That’s true in some cases—but not all.
Amazon
- Amazon collects and remits sales tax in many U.S. states due to Marketplace Facilitator laws
- In Canada, Amazon does not collect GST/QST on your behalf—you’re responsible
Shopify
- Shopify provides tax calculation tools, but you must register, collect, and remit yourself
- You can automate tax collection per province or country, but you must file returns independently
Stripe
- Stripe Tax is available, but requires configuration and correct nexus mapping
- You’re still responsible for ensuring filings are submitted on time
What This Means for Sellers
Even if your platform calculates tax:
- You may still need to register in each jurisdiction
- You’re likely responsible for filing and remitting
- Some platforms only collect tax in specific countries or states
